One of the many reasons that the City of Grand Rapids has been so progressive has been due to the influence of Rockford Construction, headed by CEO Mike VanGessel.
I had the opportunity to meet Mike several weeks ago at an open house for one of the many projects this local company has in its development portfolio, The Morton. Located at 55 Ionia, NW, “The Morton” is home to approximately 100 city apartments, with onsite retail and restaurants in the mix. A limited number of condominium units are located on the 12th and Penthouse floors, each featuring their own unique floor plan. The amenities include a community room, fitness center, concierge services, staffed lobby, secure storage and property management. Condo owners also have exclusive access to a rooftop living area with both indoor and outdoor features. Pets are welcome.
One of the most recent featured updates, found in our Sunday Grand Rapids Press; outlines how Mike VanGessel is revitalizing areas in our city’s NW location. At Bridge Street & Turner Avenue, a mixed development to include apartments, office space and a New Holland Brewing Company site, totaling an investment of $17 million dollars. There is more more progress on its way as well; with another Rockford Construction investment on a 3.5 acre site, what CEO VanGesssel calls the “Super Block”!

Another current noteworthy project in Grand Rapids; is “The Lofts, on Alabama“. “The Lofts” is a partnership with 616 Development, another of our city’s ambitious local businesses. This project will contain 85 loft apartments and it also a $17+ million-dollar project. To the South, at W. Fulton, “Fulton Place” is in the works. “Fulton Place” is a 112-unit student housing complex within walking distance of Grand Valley State’s downtown campus. It is slated to open this fall and the total investment is reported at $35 million dollars.
