Tis the season and how happy I am to have run across an excellent article, written by a local landscaping guru, Doug Niemeyer!
Here are some of Niemeyer’s tips on selecting, protecting and keeping a healthy indoor tree, during this coming holiday season.
-
Trees that hold their needles the longest (in order): Douglas & Fraser fir, Scotch pine, and finally the blue, black and white pine.
-
When picking out a tree, weight is important: The heavier the tree, the more sap it has and the longer it will keep.
-
Contrary to belief, a farm cut tree will last approximately the same length of time that a freshly cut tree does. This fact is due to the cycle that occurs as evergreens go dormant in early November, which means that most of the sap has traveled to the roots for storage.
-
Always give your tree a fresh cut just prior (5 minutes) before putting it into the tree stand. For the first fill, use very hot tap water, which will thin the gummy sap in the cambium tubes and allow the tree to drink more freely. This is the only time hot water is required during watering periods. More importantly is that the bowl is always full.
Your boughs so green in summertime, Stay bravely green in wintertime.
Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree, You fill my heart with music…
