On November 10, we will celebrate the birthday of our U.S. Marine Corps. In 1921, General John Lejeune issued “Order # 47”, which provided a summary of the history, mission and traditions of the Corps. General Lejeune directed that the order be read to every command each subsequent year on November 10 in honor of the founding of the Marine Corps. In 1952 it was formalized by Commandant General Lemuel Sheperd Jr., who directed the celebration of the Marine Corps birthday be formalized throughout the Corps, and the details were included in the Marine Corps Drill Manual approved in 1956. Provisions include a cake ceremony held at the Marine Corps Birthday Ball. www.military.com
