When Memorial weekend arrives each year, I think of the beginning of the summer season on the water. Depending on where one lives, family traditions or the making of your own tradition, we all seem to look forward to and appreciate our State of Michigan, a true water wonderland.
If you have not had a recent opportunity to visit our Upper Peninsula this could be your year to head north, driving over our Mighty Mac Bridge: Sparkling aqua colored waters, merging our Great Lakes Michigan & Huron, with spectacular views of nearby islands, freighters, sail boats, cruisers and our famous Mackinac Island. Who wouldn’t be excited to take a ferry from Michigan City or Saint Ignace to this captivating and bustling port? With the sounds of international visitors’ voices, the smells of fudge and horses and the activities at Fort Mackinac, what isn’t there to like? Plan on plenty of walking or rent a bicycle and circle the island on wheels. If fortunate to hitch a carriage ride, the drivers are knowledgeable about the island’s history, pointing out various Victorian homes, telling stories about the founding fathers and local Indians as well as statistics regarding population, the island school and memorable well-known visitors.
As a wedding destination, it will not be unusual to see a wedding or bridal party. With the backdrop of water and some of the most beautiful flowers and shrubs in Michigan, it’s a magical, picture perfect location for those in love. With pubs, good restaurants and the best ice cream ever, make it a point, summer 2016, to renew or experience one of Michigan’s “Up North” jewels.
