A 127-year-old building will see new life! Construction will begin this spring at 50 Monroe, NW, currently announced by Sam Cummings, managing partner of CWD Commercial Real Estate Investments. The 130-room hotel will house AC Hotels by Marriott and face the existing Courtyard by Marriott, which is a 208-room hotel owned by the Amway Hotel Corporation. The conversion of this site will reduce the amount of unused office space and fill a void for needed destination stays. In addition to rooms, the building will house a work-out facility and a restaurant. AC Hotels by Marriott are found in 22 United States Urban locations.

Market Street, site of the City of Grand Rapids’ wastewater facility is preparing for a large upgrade: A $21 million dollar biodigester! This machine is used to handle food waste and there are several components to its processing. Carbon filters will be used to control odors. During the first phase, the city will build three tanks, each 1.4 million gallons in size. Gas produced by the food breakdown will power a turbine, producing 60% of the wastewater plants’ electrical use. The waste sludge will be safe to distribute to either a landfill or vacant land not being farmed. The transmission will be in the form of a 10-inch pipe running under Market Street. The first connection will be Founders Brewery.
Additional investment will be needed to remove both calcium and phosphorous from the pipe line…
The Good News is – Phosphorous can be recycled & sold at $400 per ton!
