What does it take to learn the required skills to complete the Lineman Apprenticeship program and become a U.S. Department of Labor registered Journeyman Lineman?
7,000 hours of on-the-job training plus classroom and field training over a four year period. At the completion of each level of training, workers are observed and qualified by their supervisors and other workers.
During the winter, candidates spend many hours in the classroom training and in the summer, they attend an outdoor training facility coordinated by Great Lakes Energy. With this certification, a Journeyman can step in and supervise a crew if the foreman is not present as well as train apprentice linemen and other employees. These men are qualified to work on both underground and overhead lines and can work stand-by and call-out duties.
