Facilitated by the yearning for our own national flag as well as aiming for our independence from Great Britain, our new flag was to have 13 strips, alternating red and white, with 13 white stars on a blue field. The stars signified the original 13-member colonies. The colors signify “red” for hardiness & valor, “white” for purity & innocence and “blue” for vigilance, perseverance & justice.
For more than 200 years, the American flag has been American’s symbol of unity & pride. Flag Day was established as a formal national holiday in 1949, however it is not a federal holiday and the only state that recognizes & celebrates this historical event is Pennsylvania.
