In August, the Coast Guard will be celebrating its 228th birthday. One of America’s five armed forces, its founding & beginning date is August 4, 1790, when the first Congress authorized the construction of 10 vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws. The Coast Guard is a multi-mission, maritime, military service and the smallest of the armed services. Its mission is to protect the public, the environment and U.S. economic interests in our nation’s waterways, along the coast, on international waters and to support national security.

As a volunteer at Spectrum Butterworth, I take interest in ongoing events within this health care system. Last week, Spectrum’s Board of Directors announced that Freese Decker has been hired as their new CEO; She is a mother of 2 children, lives in Cascade Township and will begin her new role at the helm of Spectrum Health on September 1, as Richard Breon, the current president is retiring after 18 years of service to our West Michigan community.
Ms. Freese is formerly from the State of Iowa and has been working in the Spectrum system since 2002. She was chosen, unanimously, by the Spectrum Board over a large field of candidates after a nation-wide search.
